Location: Family Shelter Site

Status/Hours: Full-time, Monday – Friday (on-call availability required for emergencies)

Salary Range: $65,000 - $65,000

Program Description

Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) operates family shelters providing safe, supportive, and dignified transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness. Our shelter programs are guided by a trauma-informed, strengths-based philosophy and offer a comprehensive continuum of services—including case management, housing placement, recreation, and supportive programming—to help families achieve stability and permanent housing as quickly as possible. All shelter staff are expected to uphold BCS's commitment to equity, cultural humility, and client-centered care.

Position Overview

The Maintenance Supervisor oversees all facility maintenance operations for the family shelter, ensuring the building is safe, clean, compliant, and well-maintained for residents, staff, and visitors. This role provides direct supervision to maintenance technicians, manages vendor relationships, coordinates capital and preventive maintenance projects, and ensures compliance with DHS facility inspection standards.

Key Responsibilities

Supervisory and Operational Oversight

  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate maintenance technicians; assign and prioritize work orders and maintenance tasks.

  • Conduct regular inspections of all shelter areas, including rooms, common spaces, mechanical rooms, and exterior areas.

  • Develop and manage a preventive maintenance schedule for all building systems and equipment.

  • Serve as primary on-call contact for facility emergencies after hours; coordinate response and repair.

Vendor and Contract Management

  • Manage relationships with contractors, vendors, and service providers for repairs, inspections, and capital projects.

  • Obtain quotes, review scopes of work, and coordinate vendor access to the facility.

  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance with building and safety standards.

  • Track and process invoices and maintenance-related purchasing within budget authority.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure facility compliance with DHS inspection standards, NYC building codes, fire codes, and applicable regulations.

  • Prepare and maintain facility inspection logs, work order records, and compliance documentation.

  • Coordinate and prepare the facility for DHS and other regulatory inspections.

  • Report significant facility issues and capital needs to the Program Director.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational certification or Associate's degree in a relevant trade preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of four years of building maintenance experience, including at least two years in a supervisory role; residential facility or shelter experience strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge: Working knowledge of NYC building codes, DHS facility standards, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire safety systems.

  • Skills: Strong supervisory, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. Effective vendor and contractor management.

  • Certifications: Boiler certification (F-60) preferred; relevant trade license a plus.

  • Other: Valid NYS driver's license required. Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check in accordance with applicable law, including NYC Fair Chance Act requirements.
