Assistant Director - 3rd Ave Transitional Living

Assistant Director - Transitional Shelter

Location: 3rd Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY

Reports to: Program Director

Hours: Full time- able to work evenings and weekends; availability to be on call 24/7 in case of emergencies

Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000

Program Summary: The Transitional Shelter is a 37-bed transitional shelter in Sunset Park, Brooklyn for homeless young women, ages 18 to 25. The shelter empowers women to obtain permanent housing and helps them develop the independent living skills necessary for life beyond the shelter. Residents gain access to a variety of services such as independent living skills workshops, individual and group counseling, and assistance in securing permanent housing.

The Assistant Director, in collaboration with the Program Director, will oversee the day-to-day operations and management of our transitional shelter and ensure the provision of consistent supervision and management for all aspects of high quality program service delivery to clients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide consistent supervision and management for all aspects of high quality program services delivery to clients from vulnerable populations in accordance with funder and regulatory requirements; best practices; BCS policies and Core Values; and Code of Conduct for Custodians of People with Special Needs. Serve as a role model to all stakeholders.

  • Responsible for cultivating a safe and affirming temporary living environment for residents - some living with a significant mental illness and trauma, and some identifying as part of the LQBTQIA+ community.

  • Ensure appropriate 24/7 staffing in compliance with city and state regulations

  • Oversee high quality standards for daily shelter operations: meal service, security screenings, room inspections, client transportation, intake for new admissions, incident management, residence and community supervision, and recreational activities

  • Assist in collecting and reporting data, monitor census management and incident reporting and conduct routine audits

  • Responsible for the supervision of operations staff , including house managers, cooks and maintenance staff

  • In partnership with Program Director and leadership, oversee training schedules for all transitional housing staff including maintaining compliance with BCS’ best practices, DHS and OTDA regulations, CPR-First Aid, Overdose Prevention, Certificate of Fitness and other program related topics

  • Implement FDNY-approved Fire Life Safety plans, required recordkeeping procedures and conduct monthly audits of all logbooks

  • Maintain adequate shelter supplies and equipment for routine operations and emergency situations. Track inventory, coordinate the ordering of supplies and assures that appropriate quantities are maintained

  • Regularly inspects shelter property for needed repairs and maintenance; coordinate and submit all maintenance requests

  • Serve as a leadership and mentor to all direct reports, and work with these individuals to identify future development needs, growth interests, opportunities for improvement, etc.

  • Responsible for ensuring that ongoing and appropriate supervision occurs in the facility

  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops and events

  • Liaison with contracted security teams to ensure adherence to DHS and OTDA regulations and Turning Point/BCS’ standard operating procedures and security plans

  • Perform related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred and five years in a supervisory role in a residential setting serving homeless or other vulnerable populations with experience in harm reduction, trauma- informed care, or a successful combination of experience and education.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that support effective and efficient communication and ability to de-escalate and foster collaboration

  • May be assigned weekend or night shifts and rotation of on-call management responsibilities

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite. Experience and proficiency with property management and case management software. Experience with incident report management software, shelter census systems and CARES preferred and other data management systems

  • Current Fire Life Safety Director Certification

  • Must have F80

  • Demonstrated experience and success in working with diverse and special needs populations
