Student Counselor & Intake Coordinator

Location: Brooklyn - Greenwood Heights, NY

Position: Student Counselor & Intake Coordinator

Division: Families, Community Building and Workforce Development

Reports to: Deputy Director, Education Center

Location: Education Center

Status/Hours: Full time, Monday - Friday, 10 am - 6 pm. Some evening and weekend hours are required.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000

Program Description:

The Education Center provides adult education & workforce development services to the Brooklyn community. We serve students with GED preparation classes, ESOL classes, vocational training, and workforce development opportunities. In addition, the Education Center operates a Family Welcome Center in which we provide case management & wrap-around services, community arts programming, and regular community workshops & events. Many of our students speak Spanish, Arabic, or Chinese as their first language.


Position Description:

BCS Education Center is hiring a Student Counselor who can 1) provide case management to students in ESL and GED preparation classes, and 2) coordinate intake for students entering ESL and GED programs.

Accountable For:

  • Intake targets
  • Retention targets
  • Collection of vital records

Responsibilities:

  • Case management and career counseling services for students in GED preparation and ESL classes.
  • Coordinate intake for up to 500 students entering GED preparation and ESL classes each year.
  • Pre-testing, and post-testing using TABE, BestPlus 2.0, and Best Literacy.
  • Work with students in the development of education & employment plans.
  • Community outreach.
  • Conduct job readiness workshops that introduce students to the Job Zone, resume writing, and interview preparation.
  • Assist learners with employment, internship, and college applications.
  • Collaborate with teachers and counselors in supporting participants through challenges that they face while working toward their educational goals.
  • Collection of vital records.
  • Attend professional development training.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Language skills in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Chinese are preferred.
  • Two years experience in case management and/or counseling.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to be resourceful.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings, as required.
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate when faced with stress, feedback, or change.
