Position: Cook - Transitional Living Shelter

Reports to: Program Director

Work Location: 968 3rd Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY 11232

Hours: 1 Part time shifts available:

Monday - Thursday 10:00am - 6:00 pm - 28 hours.

Salary Range: $18.00/hour - $18.00/hour

Program Description:

Brooklyn Community Services is one of Brooklyn’s first and largest non-sectarian social services agencies. BCS, which presently serves more than 10,000 individuals annually, is committed to a broad and diverse range of services including education and childcare; services to strengthen families; and services to foster self-sufficiency for adults.

The 3rd Avenue is a NYC DHS transitional shelter program designed to provide employment assistance and permanent housing for young women ages 18 - 25 years old. The program is located in Sunset Park Brooklyn, NY

Position Summary: The Cook plans, prepares, and cooks food items to ensure the highest quality service and experience for customers, keep the kitchen organized and running efficiently and ensure proper food handling, sanitation and following food storage procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a weekly menu.
  • Actively maintain proper inventory of all food and kitchen items
  • Place food orders on a bi-weekly basis with assistance from Operations Manager
  • Manage all food and kitchen supply deliveries from vendors
  • Receive, store and organize food and supplies in designated areas in compliance with city guidelines
  • Date all food items and follow the first in and first out rules when preparing food
  • Keep all food storage areas, refrigerators, and freezers clean and organized at all times
  • Prepare and serve meals to the residents.
  • Complete daily/monthly food service reports
  • Ensure that all food supplies are accessible to overnight and weekend staff
  • Maintain cleanliness of all kitchen appliances and kitchen area at all times during shift
  • Keep all food shelves stocked and organized on a daily basis
  • Effectively communicate shelter rules in a respectful manner
  • Communicate with social services staff any conflicts that arise with residents
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, trainings and TP events
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Food handler's certification and at least 2 years of cooking experience in a restaurant or residential program
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time and lift heavy items.
  • Must be able to reach and move items overhead.
  • Exposure to extreme heat, steam, and cold, and cleaning agents present in a kitchen environment.
  • While performing this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, twist and lift heavy items overhead, side to side, across rooms and up and down stairs
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Able to navigate stairs while carrying heavy items
  • Administrative duties as assigned
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of special needs population
